NC Thinner vs PU Thinner: What Is the Difference?

NC and PU thinners are both used to reduce coatings, but they are formulated for different resin systems and are not interchangeable. Using the wrong one is a common cause of finish defects.

NC thinner

NC thinner is built for nitrocellulose lacquers. It evaporates quickly, which suits fast-drying wood and fine finishing lines. It is forgiving and easy to apply, but NC finishes are generally less chemically and abrasion resistant than polyurethane.

PU thinner

PU thinner is built for polyurethane systems, including two-pack coatings. It is formulated for controlled flow and levelling so the cured film is hard, glossy and durable. PU thinner is typically moisture-controlled, because water interferes with the curing chemistry of many PU systems.

Which should you use?

• Use NC thinner for nitrocellulose lacquers and quick wood finishing.
• Use PU thinner for polyurethane coatings needing a hard, durable finish.
• Always follow the coating manufacturer’s recommended thinner and ratio.
